In this parable I believe Jesus gives three requirements for the church:
THE CHURCH IS TO LIKE A ROAD TO THE INN VERSE 30
That is, we are to go out on the road on purpose and bring people in, regardless of any prejudice. We are to go on purpose because Jesus came to this world on purpose to save us from hell.
The road may be dangerous with rocks, boulders and canyons, and even thieves; but life is dangerous. Our job is to have compassion on them and bring them in.
THE CHURCH IS TO BE LIKE A ROTATING DOOR
That is, to welcome people in and show them our hospitality. The door swings in and out; meaning that we are to greet them as they enter and wish them well as they leave.
THE CHURCH IS TO HAVE AN RIGHT HEART VERSE 35
That is a loving, kind and compassionate heart. Jesus came to where they were and we should go where they are to reach them.
The instructions here are three-fold:
- Help to feed him.
- Take care of his wound.
- Love him.
That’s what compassion really is, not just knowing, but being moved with a heart of compassion.
