I do not believe that there is a discrepancy at all in this account of Joseph being sold by either the Midianites or Ishmeelites. The issue is that the brothers sought to sell him into slavery.
I. DON’T MISS HIS PLAN – JOSEPH IN POTIPHAR’S HOUSE.
Joseph had no idea that it was God’s plan for him to one day be in Potiphar’s house to be tempted by his wife 39:1-4.
He realized that God’s plan for him was not to fall into sin – so he fled from it.
2 Timothy 2:22 Paul admonishes Timothy to “flee youthful lusts.” Flee from sin young person – it is God’s plan for you.
Listen: Joseph lost his coat, but he kept his character. Joseph could have given in to temptation, but he fled. “He got him out.”
Flee from sin of lying, cheating, lusting stealing, jealousy, envy and hatred. All these plus many others are “youthful lusts.” Don’t miss His plan. It may not be as you plan it, but don’t miss it.
God was testing Joseph to see if he could control himself as a servant, because if he could not control himself as a servant he would never be able to control others as a ruler.
II. DON’T MISS HIS PURPOSE – JOSEPH IN PRISON! 39:20-21, Romans 8:28.
God had a purpose for Joseph to be in POTIPHAR’S HOUSE. It may have been just to test his character.
TO BE CONCLUDED TOMORROW!
