Please read Colossians 1:3-13
I believe more than anything, being thankful is having a heartfelt gratitude for God.
Paul gives thanks for the Colossians’ faith in Christ; Paul always opened his letters with giving thanks. Paul is thankful that their faith is Christward (past), their love is manward (present), and their hope is future. If we have hope in this life only, we are to be pitied (I Corinthians 15:19), but if our hope is in heaven, it will manifest itself in love and bring forth fruit to this present world.
Now, why did Paul give thanks: In verse 1, he found God’s will. He had peace with God and was obedient to His Word. It was that obedience to God’s Word that gave him peace with men. This is what we are saying:
I. OBEDIENCE TO GOD’S WORD PRODUCES THANKFULNESS – verse 3.
II. OUR SALVATION AND HOPE FOR HEAVEN PRODUCE THANKFULNESS – verse 12.
III. GROWTH IN CHRIST PRODUCES THANKFULNESS – chapter 2, verse 7 & II Peter 3:18.
IV. TRUSTING IN CHRIST PRODUCES THANKFULNESS – verse 15.
V. THE LORD HIMSELF PRODUCES THANKFULNESS – verse 17.
VI. PRAYER PRODUCES THANKFULNESS – chapter 4, verse 2.
Remember, Paul was in bondage when he wrote this letter, but he was thankful. Oh, how we need to be thankful – to have a heart full of gratitude! God’s will includes constant joy, ceaseless prayer, and endless thankfulness.
