2 Timothy 4:1-8, verses 6-8 text.
Paul liked the word endure in 1 Thessalonians 1:4, “So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:”and 2 Timothy 2:3, “Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.” 2 Timothy 2:10, “Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.” 4:3, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;” 4:5, “But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry,” and Hebrews 12:7, “If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?”
So, how do we endure hardness?
Well, probably most important is that we must make a decision to take it. And realize that it is He who enabled us in James 5:11, “Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.”1 Corinthians 13:7, “Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.” 2 Corinthians 1:6, “And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.” 2 Timothy 1:8, “Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;” Hebrews 6:15, “And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.” 10:32, “But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions;”11:27, “By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.”
James 1:12, “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.”
Hebrews 12:2-3, “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.”
Endure: to suffer hardship and afflictions as good soldiers, HOW?
