Psalm 121, verse 8 is the text.
Some have called this Psalm, “The new year Psalm.” Whatever the circumstances of this psalm or whatever occasion, three things are certain:
I. THE GREATNESS OF OUR NEED.
A. There will be certainties.
Like duties, difficulties and trials, temptations as well as triumphs, opportunities as well as missed opportunities.
Some of great joy or some of great sorrow. Some new life as well as some death.
II. THE INSUFFICIENCY (LACK) OF HUMAN HELP.
A. They are not always with us.
Parents and grandparents die brothers and sisters move on and are scattered.
B. They cannot give us the help we need.
Sympathy is good but we need more. Understanding is OK, but it often falls short.
III. THE CERTAINTY OF GOD’S HELP, VERSES 1-2.
A. With Him is all power.
B. He is constant verses 3-4.
C. He will be there to defend us: our keeper, shade verse 5.
D. He will guard us from all forms of evil.
E. Evil takes many forms and guise verses 6-7.
F. He will preserve us. Not only our homes, reputations but our soul.
G. Even until we die.
A promise from God is a statement we can depend on with absolute confidence.
