HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL OUR FAMILY AND ALL OUR SOCIAL MEDIA FRIENDS.
This is a power-packed passage that covers the great pillars of the Christian life: Faith, love and hope. It not only gives the source of our faith, love and hope, but also the foundation, which is The Word of God.
These great pillars are good reason to give thanks to God over the Thanksgiving season. These pillars are so great that they stirred Paul to thank God that they exist in the Colossian Christians. Think of it: these pillars are the very things that hold our Christian life together.
The Colossian church could not exist without these pillars, and neither can we. Paul gives thanks to the only living and true God even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, because there is no God except the Father of our Lord. Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and He is exactly who He claimed to be.
I. WE THANK GOD FOR THE GREAT PILLAR OF FAITH.
Faith and love are the two basic qualities of life for true Christians.
A. It is not the energy of faith in self.
B. It is not the envy of faith in others.
But it is only in the Person of Christ.
II. WE THANK GOD FOR THE PILLAR OF LOVE.
This is not speaking of the natural love that people have for each other, but this is the pillar of love that Christians have for each other. Why is this love so much greater than the natural love? Two good reasons:
This love is based upon the love of Jesus Christ – the greatest of love, and is seen in His sacrificial death for the sinner. As we give our lives to follow Christ and His love, we should also be willing to sacrifice ourselves for others.
This love is stirred by The Holy Spirit, and is a supernatural love, which means the Holy Spirit stirs us to love others as Jesus loved us. This is the reason we ought to love all people, as Christ loved them.
The same Holy Spirit indwells and gives us a bond with all others that are indwelt by the same Holy Spirit.
III. WE GIVE THANKS FOR THE PILLAR OF HOPE.
The first two great pillars of faith and love have one great basis, hope. Hope is the reason we first surrender to Christ:
A. The hope we have of being raised from the dead and being given a new glorious body just like Christ.
B. The hope of His coming again.
These THREE GREAT PILLARS give us reason
for a real THANKSGIVING.
