Peter, here had two fears which most Christians face this morning.
I. THE FEAR OF SINKING VERSES 23-27.
Also see Matthew 8:23-27 if time. Peter was beginning to sink. You might be sinking at this very moment: Satan always tries to sow his little doubts at times like this.
Satan will suggest. Why don’t you try something else for a change? Or he will suggest that you are getting pretty good. Or he will develop bitterness, jealousy, anger, etc.
II. THE FEAR OF SUFFERING 1 PETER 4:12-16.
In Matthew 16:21-26 Jesus told of His own suffering. Here Peter was beginning to see that his confidence was in a living person. What we believe about Christ determines how we respond to Him. If we do not recognize him as the Son of God, it is unlikely we will give Him the honor and devotion He deserves.
Peter clearly saw Jesus as the Promised Son of God. And, what a difference it made in his response: Because he had the right view of the Saviour, he yielded his life completely in Him.
Augustine said: “Jesus Christ is not valued at all until He is valued above all.”
